The fifth album of Marja Mattlar, a singer / songwriter from Vuorenkylä, Finland was released 15.2.2007. The new album named ”Polku” brings us in a way a newborn artist; from the ashes of the last album “Tuli” (“Fire”) grows this “Polku” (“The Path”). The new songs sound fresh and bright. The albums wide and crystallized athmosphere can be traced back to Marja´s new collaboration with Ilmari Issakainen and Tyko Saarikko from a group Tenhi.
Marja, who has also showed her songwriting skills in Finland´s heavy metal scene, has followed her road to “Polku” which has been a variable but consistent journey . Her debut ”Pariisi –Vuorenkylä” from 1993 was the first release of ISIS-label, produced by a french folk-guru Gabriel Yacoub and made in co-operation with french musicians in Paris. The second ”Lumi” (1996) was more in a finnish style, the album being produced by Pekka Pohjola. ”Vesi” was made in Sweden in collaboration with swedish and french musicians during the time when millennium turned into the other. ”Tuli” (2003) was a co-operation with finnish singer / composer Yari.
Marja describes the birth of ”Polku”:
” I heard the music of Tenhi some years ago and enjoyed it a lot. Their musical views in their own albums, their freedom from prejudice impressed me so much that I wanted to contact them. Ilmari and Tyko took the chance and our sessions started during summer 2005. In this concept they wanted to start from the situation where the songs are born; meaning the singers voice and the playing of an acoustic guitar”.
The sessions of ”Polku” were made in an old primary school in Pirkanmaa, in an ordinary living-room in Helsinki and in an attic over sheepfold in Vuorenkylä. Among the musicians with Marja, Ilmari and Tyko were violinplayer Inka Eerola from Tenhi, Aila Hettula played oboe, Unna Kemppainen cello and Marja´s partner from livegigs, Eveliina Kontio played the kantele.
”Polku” was recorded, arranged and produced by Ilmari Issakainen and Tyko Saarikko from Tenhi.
